Newcity Breakout Artists of 2022

Chicago Artists Coalition

“In the context of ongoing crises in our city—structural racism, the pandemic, unequal access to healthcare and affordable housing, climate change—this group of Breakout Artists concentrates on their communities in ways that are both generous and deeply restorative. In addition to creating brilliant work that is complex and colorful, joyful and heavy, these artists are rooted in their communities, ever striving to build meaningful connections and expand opportunities for others.” - Kerry Cardoza

Through my observations and experiences, this diptych is part of a series of prints and drawings that revolved around the evident priorities the US officials have had during the COVID-19 pandemic, Black Lives Matters protests, and the 2021 US Capital insurrection. It was clear that security was either enforced or not, depending on who and their reasons for protesting. The images also contrast the uncompassionate realities that have been exposed in schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, and families.
